Our Story

Jason’s Light transforms one family’s tragedy into a force for hope, helping prevent suicide among law enforcement and other first responders.

A force for good

When Jason Liaban, a police officer and father of four, unexpectedly passed, his heartbroken family was determined to help spare others from this tragedy. They began raising funds for a scholarship in Jason’s memory, advocating for suicide prevention policies, and urging police departments to incorporate suicide prevention measures.

In 2025, the Jason’s Light Foundation was officially created, with a mission to help prevent suicide among law enforcement professionals and other first responders in New Jersey and beyond.

Why First Responders?

Law enforcement officers and other first responders face extraordinarily high levels of occupational stress.  Trauma, violence, and danger are part of their everyday lives. As a result, they’re at much greater risk for mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress. It’s why suicide prevention and awareness are so critical for this population—and why we’re determined to help.
